Children's Swim Lessons at National Jewish Health


Swim Lessons on SATURDAYS

 



FALL 2009 Sessions

Session 1:  Saturdays, Sept. 12 - Oct. 24
Session 2:  Saturdays, Oct. 31 - Dec. 19
(no class Nov. 28)


Sessions are 7 weeks.  All classes are on SATURDAYS.

Location:  National Jewish Health, 1400 Jackson Street
(at Colfax and Colorado)



Registration Dates

Registration for Session 1: Tuesday, Aug. 25* - Tuesday, Sept. 8

Registration for Session 2: Tuesday, Oct. 13* – Tuesday, Oct. 27

*No registrations will be taken before this date.


All students MUST be registered before attending class.  No one is permitted to enter the pool area without registering and paying in advance.


 

Registration Procedures


Registration may be done by email (moreyneighborhoodcenter@dpsk12.org) (preferred), by phone (720-424-0791), by fax (720-424-0726), or in person Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm (14th and Emerson). 

Please provide your child’s name, gender, date of birth, parent name, address, phone numbers (cell, home, and work), email address, class name, time of class and payment information.  (For returning students, email the class name, class time and payment information, if not already on file).

All students MUST be registered before attending class.  No one is permitted to enter the pool area without registering and paying in advance.

PAYMENT MUST BE MADE IN FULL AT TIME OF REGISTRATION.  Payment may be made by VISA, Mastercard, check, money order or cash.  Checks should be made out to DPS Community Education. 

Students may be put on a waiting list if class is full. Class may occasionally be canceled due to low enrollment.  Fees for canceled classes will be refunded.

 

Class Descriptions


PARENT-CHILD SWIM (ages 6 months to 4 years)
A class for first-time swimmers.  Parent must accompany child into the pool.  This class helps your child become comfortable in and around the water by emphasizing pre-swimming skills through games and activities.

(A) 10:30 – 11:00 am    OR    (B) 12:00 – 12:30 pm

PRESCHOOL - Building Confidence
Designed for students who may be apprehensive around the water.  Emphasis is on putting their face in the water, blowing bubbles, floating, beginning to kick, and jumping into the water unassisted.

(A) 9:00 – 9:30 am   OR    (B) 10:00 – 10:30
   
BEGINNER - Fundamental Skills
Students should be able to submerge themselves and to attempt to swim independently.  Students will learn to feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy water safely.  Emphasis is on fundamental skills such as floating on the front and back without support and recovering to a vertical position, and performing various arm and leg actions on the front and back unsupported.

(A) 9:00 – 9:30 am    OR    (B) 9:30 am – 10:00 am   OR    (C) 11:30 am – 12:00 pm

INTERMEDIATE – Stroke Introduction
Students must be able to swim on their front and back without support.  Students will learn to coordinate arm and leg action for the front and back crawl and will be introduced to deep water and head first entries from the side of the pool.

ADVANCED – Stroke Development (45 minutes)
Students must be able to swim the front and back crawl across the width of the pool and be comfortable in deep water.  Emphasis is on improving front and back crawl and swimming the length of the pool.  Students will be introduced to elementary back stroke, breaststroke, and rhythmic breathing.

MASTERS - Stroke Refinement & Proficiency (60 minutes)
Students must be able to swim front and back crawl with rhythmic breathing the length of the pool and have some knowledge of elementary backstroke and breaststroke.  Emphasis on refining front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke.  Introduction to butterfly, sidestroke, diving, turns, and Personal Water Safety.

11:00 am – 12:00 pm

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:  Parents are not permitted in the pool.  Children are not permitted in the pool except during their class time.  All swimmers must leave the pool when their lesson is over.  Due to the respiratory concerns of patients at the hospital, no perfumes, cologne, hairspray or any type of perfuming sprays are allowed in the building.  No food or drink is allowed anywhere in the hospital.  Please do not bring coffee, pop, or snacks for the kids into the pool area.   No smoking is allowed anywhere on hospital property.  All perimeter doors must remain locked. Please respect hospital security precautions by entering and exiting the pool area only through the main hospital doors.  For safety precautions, there is no adult swim or use of the diving board during lessons.  Any diving must be supervised by the instructors as part of the children’s lessons. Plastic pants and a cloth or swimming diaper is required for any child who is not potty trained.
